Lava fountain filmed from a helicopter above a volcanic crater
A column of lava rose from the crater floor, feeding glowing flows beneath a grey plume of gas.
Helicopter footage shows a bright orange fountain of lava erupting steadily from a vent inside a broad crater. Lava pooling at the base of the fountain spreads across the crater floor in glowing channels.
As the camera moves closer, the edges of the flows can be seen cooling and darkening while the central channel keeps its vivid colour. Gas and steam torn from the fountain drift along the crater wall with the wind.
Scientists advise watching eruptions like this only from designated viewpoints and keeping an eye on the direction of the gas plume.
